New Audi Cam brings servicing to the small screen

Pioneering Audi Cam service enables customers to see and hear about necessary repair work and to authorise it all via mobile phone or PC.

  • World first for a car maker - Audi Cam service now rolled out across all UK Audi Centres
  • Hand-held camera produces narrated film clips that are embedded in customer-specific PIN-protected web page that is emailed to the customer
  • Page includes video and audio commentary, VAT-inclusive pricing for each job, personal technician and service team profiles and action buttons for automatic authorisation of work

The term ‘candid camera’ takes on new meaning from this week as Audi Centre technicians across the UK double as pioneering ‘Audi Cam’ film producers to further the brand’s quest for absolute clarity and transparency in its customer relationships. The new Audi Cam service will be the first in the world to enable technicians carrying out workshop inspections to focus hand-held ‘Audi Cams’ on specific problems, to deliver verbal diagnoses and to send the resulting film clips to customers’ home computers or smartphones before any work begins.

The Audi Cam is a small, hand-held video camera capable of delivering high quality footage with excellent sound quality. Audi Approved technicians, all of whom have undergone tailor-made training, will use it first to visually and verbally identify a customer’s car on film after conducting an initial inspection. They will then pinpoint and clearly explain any problems found, and then propose solutions to those problems.

Each problem identified – for example brake pad wear or illegal tyre tread depth – is filmed as an individual clip to minimise file size and reduce ‘buffering’, and in as little as three minutes can then be incorporated into a web page that is exclusive to the customer involved. A secure link to that page is then emailed to the customer, who has sole access to it using a unique PIN number which is sent separately by text message to their mobile phone. The page is optimised for compatibility with home computers and smartphones, so its full functionality is available ‘on-the-move’.

Online authorisation

The page contains the relevant film clip or clips, and grades each problem as either ‘urgent’, ‘advisory’ or ‘for info’ to give the customer a clear idea of its severity. It also provides a VAT-inclusive price quotation for each job, along with action buttons that enable the customer to authorise the Centre to proceed with it at the price quoted, to reject the work or to request a call back to discuss it.

Once the customer has added all the jobs he or she wants to proceed with to the ‘shopping basket’, they can authorise the Centre to begin the work by re-entering their unique PIN number. Before doing this, they can even gain some insight into the team which will be working on the car by viewing personal service team profiles posted on their page.

Audi Cam is an evolution of the Direct Reception technology rolled out across the Audi Centre network last year. Direct Reception gives customers audio visual access to their cars from the comfort of the Audi Centre reception area as they are worked on by technicians equipped with head-mounted cameras and two-way audio links. They are free to talk to the technicians directly, and service advisors are on hand to answer any questions that arise. The Direct Reception programme continues alongside this latest development and has a very similar objective – to instil even greater customer confidence not only in the legitimacy of each diagnosis but also the integrity and unparalleled product knowledge of Audi trained technicians.

Paul Sansom, Head of Aftersales and Service for Audi UK, welcomed the advances made by this new initiative: “Audi is unquestionably an innovator where its cars are concerned, and I’m delighted that we’re now also making real headway in advancing the art of looking after those cars and their drivers. By effectively beaming the workshop to our customers’ homes or smartphones, Audi Cam greatly simplifies the service and repair process, and at the same time breaks down more of the barriers between the service bay and the customer that have traditionally fostered scepticism and suspicion. This is genuine progress through technology in the best tradition of Vorsprung durch Technik.”

Audi group generates first-half operating profit of €2.9 billion

  • Deliveries target of more than 1.4 million for 2012 confirmed
  • CFO Axel Strotbek: “The high demand in the first half is a testament to the success of our model strategy.”

Ingolstadt, July 31, 2012 – €25.0 billion revenue, an operating profit of €2.9 billion, and an 11.5 per cent operating return on sales. These figures demonstrate how the Audi Group succeeded in adding yet another chapter to its success story in the first half of the year, despite weaker economic growth and the contraction of many car markets.

Axel Strotbek, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG for Finance and Organization, emphasized: “The high demand in the first half is a testament to the success of our model strategy.” The Company delivered 733,237 (2011: 652,892) vehicles of the Audi brand to customers, an increase of 12.3 per cent on the first six months of 2011. Demand was especially high for the new Audi Q3 as well as for the Q5, A6, A7 and A8 models.

The increase in deliveries pushed revenue up to €25,022 (21,526) million – a rise of 16.2 per cent on the previous year. The Audi Group increased its operating profit by 13.2 per cent to €2,876 (2,540) million. This was despite the stronger recessionary tendencies above all in southern EU countries. The operating return on sales of 11.5 (11.8) per cent was thus kept at the high level of recent quarters.

Following the healthy first-half business performance, the Audi Group plans to deliver a total of more than 1.4 million cars of the Audi brand in 2012 as a whole.

The Audi A1 Sportback, the Q3 and the new A3, which appears on the market in the late summer, will help Audi towards this goal and secure growing market shares in many sales markets.

The publication of the Interim Financial Report prompted CFO Strotbek to confirm another annual target of the Audi Group: “Provided the economic framework does not deteriorate further, we expect operating profit to remain on a par with 2011 despite higher expenses for new products, technologies and expanded production structures.”

Audi range ranked the UK's most secure again

Three BICSA security awards and a third consecutive overall manufacturer award for the Vorsprung durch Technik brand.

  • Audi wins third overall Manufacturer Award in British Insurance Car Security Awards, presented by the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre, Thatcham on Wednesday June 18th
  • New A4 range voted most secure in compact executive class, S8 best in performance car class, TT Roadster best in Convertible/Roadster class

For the third successive year Audi has stolen the show in the 2008 British Insurance Car Security Awards, not only scoring three category wins but also taking away the overall Manufacturer of the Year Award for the widest range of cars offering five star security.

The Vorsprung durch Technik brand’s commitment to anti-theft protection across its range was acknowledged by experts at a ceremony held on June 18th at the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre in Thatcham, Berkshire.

The top BICSA award goes to the manufacturer producing the widest range of models that satisfy stringent criteria laid down by Thatcham, including the achievement of a five star rating for ‘theft of’ security and a rating of at least four stars for ‘theft from’ security.

In addition to this all-encompassing award, Audi models were also voted best-in-class in 3 of the specific model categories assessed by the experts. The all-new A4 Saloon and Avant, S8 Saloon and TT Roadster models all outclassed rivals in their considered opinion.

Director of Audi UK Jeremy Hicks welcomed the very positive result for Audi: “I am delighted that the huge investment we have channelled into protective measures for all our cars has proved its worth yet again in Thatcham. To be acknowledged as number one for car security for a third consecutive year is an achievement which Audi AG’s security team can take considerable pride in,” he said.

Award-winning security protection is achieved right across the Audi range through features including Thatcham Category 1 alarm and immobiliser technology with interior ultrasonic protection, Thatcham Category 4 locking wheel bolts, anti-tow tilt sensors, visible Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) and extensive marked parts.

HDD navigation for stress-free motoring

With the optional hard drive based (HDD) navigation system, being lost becomes a thing of the past. Simply enter a destination using the Multi Media Interface (MMI) in the centre console, or just say where you want to go, using the advanced voice recognition system.

The HDD navigation system has a 40GB hard drive meaning that maps load incredibly fast and there’s an abundance of detail (including 3D buildings in cities and photo realistic 3D landmarks) when you zoom in. You can also specify modifications to the route such as avoiding or using motorways, toll roads and ferries. And you can recall favourite and recent destinations which are stored in your address book.

The system can also adjust the route you’re taking dynamically based on the latest traffic situation. It receives RDS-TMC (Traffic Message Channel) automatically so it knows about hold-ups before you do and, if dynamic navigation is active, the system automatically recalculates the route.

Your own personal jukebox

If you choose the HDD-based Satellite Navigation system, you can also create your own personal jukebox. With 10GB of its hard drive set aside for music, you download via CDs, USB sticks or SD memory cards up to 4,000 music tracks.

Pure listening pleasure

Have you ever arrived at your destination only to wait in the car, on your own, just until a certain piece of music has finished? If you opt for the superb Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System in your Audi Q7, it might be prudent to get into the habit of setting off a little earlier.

With the Audi Q7 and the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System you get the quintessential driving and listening experience combined.

Audi Music Interface: your music goes with you

A very wide range of portable music devices can integrate with your car via the optional Audi Music Interface. Once installed, they can be controlled with the Multi Media Interface (MMI) or multifunction steering wheel (depending on the car’s equipment). Supported devices include USB memory sticks, portable hard discs, mobile phones, and Apple iPods – even portable cassette players.

And it’s not just the audio signal that’s transmitted. With compatible devices, detailed track information is displayed.

Your own personal jukebox

If you have chosen the HDD-based Satellite Navigation system, the good news is you don’t actually have to take any of these things with you. Simply download, via CDs, USB sticks or SD memory cards up to 4,000 music tracks on to its hard drive and create your own personal jukebox.

Keeping your hands on the wheel

A Bluetooth connection is available as standard on the Q7 SE and S line models.

The options:

Bluetooth Interface

Bluetooth Interface, standard on SE and S line models is a Bluetooth connection for your mobile phone. This means that your phone can be operated using the multifunction steering wheel in conjunction with the Driver’s Information System, whilst remaining in your pocket.

In addition to standard hands-free functionality such as accepting/rejecting calls and hands-free communication, mobile phone preparation provides direct access to entries and phone numbers stored in the address book of compatible phones.

Mobile phone preparation high

This innovative phone solution offers an unprecedented level of convenience, as it becomes possible to literally leave your phone ‘in your jacket pocket’ and still operate it using the car controls as outlined above. In effect, the mobile phone in your jacket pocket serves merely as a mobile SIM card reader. The phone calls are made using the car so mobile phone battery life is greatly increased and reception is improved as you are using the car’s antenna.

Crystal-clear digital radio reception

DAB digital radio not only brings phenomenal sound quality without interference but also a host of features to complement the listening experience. Alongside the audio, other data may be broadcast such as the title of the track and the name of the artist.

All available radio stations are displayed and are accessible via the MMI (Multi Media Interface) so you don’t need to spend time programming separate buttons. If you leave the range of a radio station’s DAB signal, the system will automatically switch to the analogue transmission.

Exceptional in-car entertainment

As an option, your Q7 can be equipped with a stunning rear-seat entertainment package for the pleasure of your passengers. Two seven-inch screens installed in the back of the front headrests, a six-DVD player in the boot, AUX input for devices such as games consoles for each screen and sound can be delivered via the car’s audio system or through headphone sockets (one for each screen).

The Audi RS 3 Sportback - back by popular demand

Strictly limited second run of UK specification 340PS RS compact hatchbacks is now available to order

  • Audi RS badge returns to compact hatchback class in strictly limited numbers priced at original £39,930 OTR – 250 remaining build slots available
  • Turbocharged five-cylinder TFSI engine linked to standard seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission delivers 340PS and 450Nm of torque”
  • 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds, governed 155mph top speed, 31mpg capability, 212g/km CO2 output
  • quattro drive, 19-inch alloy wheels, flared lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced polymer wings, widened track, sport button controlling throttle response and exhaust note

Following its initial sell-out performance in the UK, the Audi RS 3 Sportback is making a comeback, albeit one that is likely to be fleeting. In response to consistent demand, an additional, strictly limited production run has been secured, and just 250 slots now remain for UK customers. These examples will be available at the same £39,930 OTR price as the original 500 car quota which was rapidly snapped up in 2011.

A turbocharged 2.5-litre petrol engine punches the RS 3 Sportback at the horizon to the tune of a rich, bass-heavy five-cylinder soundtrack that can be further intensified at the touch of a dashboard-mounted Sport button. A total of 340PS and 450Nm is split between the four driven wheels thanks to quattro all-wheel-drive, and passes through a standard seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission with rapid fire shifts.

As befits an RS model the impressive output of this engine is reflected in an exceptional 0-62mph sprint time of just 4.6 seconds and an electronically governed 155mph top speed. Yet less predictably, this rapidity doesn’t rule out the potential for up to 31mpg according to the combined cycle test.

Carbon fibre aids weight reduction

A delivery on demand oil pump and a regeneration system that recovers energy during deceleration help to shore up the engine’s impressive economy performance. Equally importantly, features such as the vermicular graphite engine block and carbon fibre-reinforced polymer front wings work in favour of a relatively modest 1,575kg kerb weight and a suitably strong 216PS per tonne power-to-weight ratio.

The benefits of these measures can be felt not only in the intensity of the RS 3 Sportback’s pace, but also in the agile and animated handling delivered by its lowered McPherson strut front and four-link rear suspension. Its balance is boosted by a widened, 1,564 millimetre track, and its grip is maximised by 19-inch alloy wheels shod with 235/35 series tyres at the front and 225/35 at the rear. The quattro permanent all-wheel drive system with its electronically controlled multi-plate clutch also oversees proceedings, granting the RS 3 Sportback an extra measure of traction, composure and stability.

The RS 3 Sportback can also move more freely thanks to its specially developed electronic stability control (ESC). It features a Sport mode that activates later intervention of the braking and acceleration retardation functions to enable greater adjustability without compromising safety, and can be switched off entirely for circuit use.

Highly efficient electromechanical rack-and-pinion steering provides a suitably direct gear ratio of 16.2:1 for keen turn-in, while internally ventilated disc brakes with four-piston fixed calipers modulate speed powerfully and progressively.

A deeper front apron that incorporates enlarged air intakes, an anthracite coloured single-frame grille and xenon plus headlamps indicate to drivers in front that the RS 3 Sportback is a force to be reckoned with.

Its side view is dominated by its flared, lightweight front wings covering 19-inch alloy wheels, prominent sill extensions, mirror housings in matt aluminium look and a large roof spoiler. A high-gloss black diffuser insert and two elliptical exhaust tailpipes on the left accentuate the styling at the rear.

Inside, Fine Nappa leather-upholstered sports seats with silver contrasting stitching, Piano black or Aluminium Race look inlays, a flat-bottomed RS steering wheel and RS-specific instruments highlight this car’s status. Its Driver’s Information System is also unique to the RS 3 Sportback, displaying boost pressure and oil temperature and doubling as a lap timer.

Standard equipment includes acoustic rear parking sensors, electronic climate control, DVD-based satellite navigation with MMI (Multi Media Interface) functionality and xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights. Optional features include front bucket seats, roof rails in matt aluminium look and styling packages in black or matt aluminium. Five exterior colours are available, plus an unlimited selection of custom paint finishes.
